Tomohito Oda is the author and illustrator of the Japanese manga series Komi Can’t Communicate. There are twenty-four tankobon volumes of the manga, serialized in Weekly Shnen Sunday since May 2016, which are due to be released in January 2022. Viz Media has licensed the series in North America.
From September to November 2021, a live-action television drama adaption aired, while from October to December of the same year, an anime television series adapted by OLM aired. The show will return for a second season in April 2022. Netflix has acquired the rights to stream the anime series around the world.
On her first day at Itan Private High School, Shouko Komi has already been dubbed the school’s Madonna. Anyone who sees her is mesmerized by her towering good looks and long, black hair. There’s just one problem though—despite her popularity, Shouko is horrible at connecting with others.
Hitohito Tadano, a typical high school student, is nothing special. He immediately discovers that sitting next to Shouko has made him the enemy of everyone in his class because of his life credo, “read the situation and make sure to avoid conflict!” Hitohito wakes up to Shouko’s “meow” after being accidentally knocked out.
Shouko flees after he claims he didn’t hear anything. Hitohito concludes that Shouko has never been able to create a single friend because of her inability to talk to people. As a way to help Shouko overcome her communication issue, Hitahito vows to help the young woman make at least a hundred new acquaintances.
