In the kingdom of Melromarc, the Four Cardinal Heroes are a group of ordinary Japanese men who have been recruited to serve as the realm’s protectors. Throughout the ages, Melromarc has been battered by the Waves of Catastrophe, which have wreaked havoc on the land and devastated its people.

A sword, spear, bow, and shield are given to each of the four heroes to use against these Waves. Anime fan Naofumi Iwatani is cursed to be the “Shield Hero.” Naofumi is mocked and snubbed by his fellow heroes and the people of the kingdom because of his lack of offensive ability and sluggish personality, despite his meager shield.

Malty Melromarc is the only one who will train with Naofumi when the heroes are given resources and friends to train with. She betrays him quickly.

While this is the case, he is unfairly accused of exploiting her. When Naofumi gets accused of something he didn’t do, the people of Melromarc turn on him and vilify him.
